VTT’s Emilia Nordlund honored with Research Council of Finland award
Emilia Nordlund, Research Manager at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Research Council of Finland Award. The award acknowledges her contributions to food innovation, particularly in alternative proteins and cellular agriculture, and her leadership in advancing sustainable food systems.
Nordlund has played a key role in establishing a new line of research at VTT, focusing on the development of novel protein sources derived from plant-based raw materials, industrial by-products, and biotechnological processes. Her research explores how enzyme-aided methods can enhance the functionality and nutritional properties of these proteins, providing new opportunities for the food industry.
One of Nordlund’s key areas of study is the digestibility of proteins in biotechnologically produced ingredients, including those derived from plant and microbial cells. Her findings have demonstrated how bioengineering can be leveraged to develop entirely new food structures and ingredients, helping to reshape the future of food production.
Upon receiving the award, Nordlund underscored the importance of long-term research in the food sector. “This award is a very prestigious recognition,” she said. “The award and the RCF’s funding are particularly important for food research. The food system is facing a huge transformation, and long-term scientific research into the impact of new food production technologies and new food products is critical as we assess their potential as part of sustainable food production and balanced nutrition.”
Beyond her research, Nordlund leads a team at VTT and collaborates extensively with international partners, making her a key figure in food science and biotechnology. Her work aligns with the growing demand for sustainable protein sources and innovative food production techniques, addressing both environmental and nutritional challenges.
The Research Council of Finland Awards recognize early-career researchers who have demonstrated scientific creativity, innovation, and public engagement. Since their introduction in 2003, the awards have highlighted individuals whose work contributes to increasing public interest in science and expanding its role in society.
