Schouten Europe introduces Power Bites and Sea Bites, expanding plant-based snack offerings

March 17, 2025

Schouten Europe, a Dutch family-owned pioneer in plant-based protein products, has unveiled two new additions to its range: Power Bites and Sea Bites. As the market for meat and fish substitutes enters a phase of stagnation, Schouten aims to drive renewed interest in plant-based foods with snacks designed to stand on their own rather than replicate traditional animal-based products.

“Although excellent plant-based alternatives are available, direct comparisons with meat and fish can sometimes be a barrier for consumers,” said Anke van Eijk, R&D Manager at Schouten. “With Power Bites and Sea Bites, we focus on flavorful, plant-based products that stand on their own, without necessarily imitating an animal-based product.”

Power Bites offer a savory snack experience with a rich, nutty flavor but without allergens. Previously, Schouten’s Nut Balls were a successful product, but their inclusion of nuts limited production in certain environments. “That’s why we developed an alternative that offers the same taste experience but without nuts,” explained Van Eijk. “This way, even more people can enjoy this delicious plant-based snack, which is also perfect as part of a hot meal or in a salad.”

Schouten’s Sea Bites introduce a plant-based alternative for those who enjoy seafood snacks, but without directly replicating a traditional fish product. Developed using the company’s NewTexture technology, the snack offers an appealing texture and flavor profile. “With Sea Bites, we offer consumers an entirely new plant-based snacking experience, without compromising on taste or texture,” said Van Eijk. “Sea Bites are perfect as a snack on a tapas board but can also be used in a variety of dishes.”

Schouten sees the introduction of these products as part of a broader effort to reduce the environmental impact of protein production. “By 2050, the global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion people, significantly increasing the demand for protein,” noted Van Eijk. “That’s why it is crucial to reduce the environmental impact of traditional protein production.”

Schouten has been committed to advancing plant-based proteins for years, continuously innovating to support the transition to more sustainable food choices. Founded in 1990, Schouten Europe was the first Dutch company to develop plant-based meat alternatives. Today, it offers one of the most extensive assortments of plant-based products in the world, supplying private-label solutions to more than 50 countries. Schouten also develops custom products tailored to meet specific customer needs and emerging market trends, reinforcing its commitment to continuous innovation in plant-based foods.
