V-Label launches C-Label certification as Meatly becomes first accredited company

January 21, 2025

V-Label, known globally for its certification of vegan and vegetarian products, has introduced the C-Label, a certification tailored for cell-based food products. This initiative ensures transparency, consumer trust, and high standards for cellular agriculture products such as cultivated meat, seafood, and dairy. In a significant milestone, Meatly has become the first company to receive this certification.

“The C-Label reflects the need for a clear, consistent, and trustworthy standard in the rapidly evolving world of cellular agriculture,” said Renato Pichler, V-Label’s founder. “Our goal is to support both producers and consumers by ensuring that cell-based products meet rigorous standards for transparency and safety.”

To qualify for the C-Label, products must meet stringent requirements that ensure they are free from animal components in their production media, antibiotics, GMOs, pathogens, heavy metals, and plastics. The certification also mandates humane and minimally invasive cell extraction methods, underscoring its ethical focus. These rigorous standards are designed to reassure consumers about the safety and sustainability of cell-based products while also addressing environmental and ethical concerns associated with traditional animal agriculture.

Meatly, a trailblazer in cellular agriculture, has gained attention for its innovative approach to cultivated pet food. With a focus on creating sustainable and ethical alternatives to traditional meat-based pet diets, Meatly is developing products that offer the same nutritional benefits without the environmental impact of conventional farming. This strategy aligns perfectly with the C-Label’s principles of transparency, safety, and sustainability.

In a recent regulatory milestone, Meatly has also received clearance from the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) to sell cultivated meat products for pets, making it one of the first companies to achieve this status. This approval not only validates the safety and quality of Meatly’s products but also positions the company as a leader in the cultivated pet food sector. By addressing a rapidly growing market, Meatly is paving the way for cell-based innovations that benefit both animals and the environment.

As consumer interest in cellular agriculture grows, certifications like the C-Label are vital to building trust and promoting informed choices. The C-Label aims to simplify complex production processes for consumers, ensuring they understand the ethical and health benefits of cell-based products.

By introducing this certification, V-Label supports producers in differentiating themselves in a competitive market. The C-Label also facilitates innovation by providing a standardized framework for navigating regulatory landscapes and enhancing consumer confidence.
