Parry Nutraceuticals re-enters EU market with organic Spirulina import licence, concluding two-year hiatus for Indian suppliers

After a two-year hiatus, Parry Nutraceuticals has regained entry to the European market, securing an EU import licence for its organic Spirulina – the first Indian company to achieve this milestone since 2022.

This return follows the European Commission’s delisting of several Indian organic certification bodies in October 2022, a move prompted by the detection of ethylene oxide – a pesticide banned in the EU – in a shipment of organic sesame seeds. The action impacted the sole certification body for organic microalgae in India, effectively halting the import of organic Spirulina to Europe.

In response, Chennai-based Parry Nutraceuticals, known for its certified organic Spirulina, sought a Europe-based certification body capable of accrediting its products. After extensive efforts, Parry Nutraceuticals identified a qualified European partner, allowing the company to recommence exports to the EU immediately.

Throughout its absence from Europe, Parry Nutraceuticals made significant investments in research and development, refining its organic Spirulina powders and tablets with the Tuymai filtration process. This innovation preserves the Spirulina cell structure, enhancing purity, taste, and increasing levels of phycocyanin—a bioactive compound noted for its role in muscle recovery and immune support.

Parry Nutraceuticals offers its Spirulina in various forms, including granules, ideal for applications in food and beverages, supplements, and personal care. The company is also a top producer of white-label Spirulina tablets, ready for health and wellness brands to package and sell. Despite the EU restriction, sales to the U.S. and Asia remained robust during the two-year hiatus.
