Fazer introduces Taste the Future snacks featuring Solein protein in the USA

March 17, 2025

Fazer, the Finnish food company, unveiled its Taste the Future product range at the Future Food-Tech event in San Francisco last week, introducing a chocolate snack bar and oat-based drinks featuring Solein, a novel protein produced using air and electricity. The USA becomes the second country in the world where Solein-powered products are available for consumption.

Solein is developed by Finnish food technology company, Solar Foods, which aims to transform food production by creating protein without traditional agriculture. By minimizing resource use and environmental impact, Solein presents a sustainable alternative for addressing global food challenges.

“We are excited to introduce edge-cutting innovations through the Taste the Future products, reinforcing our commitment to innovating the future of food and developing sustainable food solutions that meet the needs of future generations,” commented Heli Anttila, Vice President, New Product Development at Fazer Confectionery.

The Future Food-Tech event provideed Fazer with an opportunity to gather direct consumer feedback on its new offerings, which will play a role in refining and developing the products further.

Fazer actively explores new solutions to meet evolving consumer demands, emphasizing research and innovation in food development. The Taste the Future range includes a chocolate snack bar with hazelnuts, coated in dark chocolate and containing 7% Solein, making it a source of protein. The lineup also features a vegan oat drink with 2% Solein, which contributes to its protein content. Additionally, the range includes a vegan protein drink with a banoffee flavor, containing 18g of protein, 2% of which comes from Solein, and serving as a source of fiber.

“The products introduced by Fazer are a great example of how Solein excels in the health and performance nutrition segment. Solein provides superior nutrition with great taste, ticks off all major 'free from' claims, and is one of the most sustainable proteins in the market. We are on track to getting novel food approval for Solein in the European Union in 2026, and we can't wait to see more products powered by Solein becoming available to consumers,” added Juan Manuel Benitez-Garcia, Chief Commercial Officer at Solar Foods.

Solein is derived from a single-cell organism, and is grown through a fermentation process that utilizes air and electricity, requiring minimal land, water, and energy compared to conventional agriculture. Solein is nutritionally rich, offering protein, iron, and vitamin B12, and can be incorporated into various foods while maintaining a neutral taste and color profile.
