Beyond Meat releases 2023 ESG report highlighting environmental benefits of Beyond Steak
Beyond Meat, Inc recently published its 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, detailing the company's initiatives in health, nutrition, human capital, governance, and climate management. A key component of the report is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Beyond Steak, the company's plant-based seared tips, which estimates substantial environmental advantages over traditional pre-cooked beef-based steak tips.
The LCA, conducted in accordance with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines and subjected to third-party review, indicates that Beyond Steak generates 84% less greenhouse gas emissions, consumes 93% less water, utilizes 88% less land, and requires 65% less non-renewable energy compared to its animal-based counterpart.
Additionally, the study assesses impacts on ecosystems, revealing that Beyond Steak contributes to 94% less terrestrial acidification, 95% less marine eutrophication, and 77% less freshwater eutrophication. These metrics suggest that choosing Beyond Steak over conventional beef products could lead to significant environmental benefits.
Beyond Meat's 2023 ESG Report also expands on the company's climate-related disclosures, including a comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory covering direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3), an evaluation of climate-related financial risks and opportunities, and an updated ESG materiality analysis.
Founded in 2009, Beyond Meat aims to offer plant-based products that replicate the taste and texture of animal-based meat while providing environmental and health benefits. The company's mission focuses on addressing global challenges such as human health, climate change, resource constraints, and animal welfare. By encouraging a shift from animal-based to plant-based proteins, Beyond Meat seeks to positively impact these critical areas.
