Axiom Foods tackles post-tariff pea protein market challenges with Vegotein N production in North America
The US pea protein market has been grappling with significant supply chain disruptions since steep tariffs on Chinese imports were introduced in 2023. These tariffs, which reached 270% for antidumping duties and 340% for countervailing duties, were retroactively applied to shipments dating back to August 2023. For years, Chinese producers dominated the US market, accounting for over 96% of pea protein imports for major manufacturers. This shift has caused price increases and forced product reformulations with alternative protein sources such as soy and rice. In response to these challenges, Axiom Foods has launched a strategic solution: Vegotein N, a neutral-tasting pea protein now being produced on a large scale in North America. This marks a pivotal shift in the global pea protein supply chain, providing a reliable, local source for manufacturers facing market instability.
For many years, China’s pea protein exports were a byproduct of its vast pea starch industry, primarily used in the production of vermicelli noodles. The protein-rich liquid produced during pea starch extraction was initially considered waste until its potential for global markets was realized. The 2023 tariffs were designed to balance the playing field, and now, Axiom Foods is stepping in to fill the gap left by China’s reduced presence in the US market.
Axiom Foods has expanded its production of Vegotein N in response to market demand. This pea protein is recognized for its functionality, neutral taste, and odor, making it one of the most versatile options available. According to an independent survey comparing US and Asian manufacturers, Vegotein N stands out in terms of its superior taste profile. Axiom’s North American facilities are set to produce over 2,000 metric tons of Vegotein™ N annually by January 2025, with plans to double capacity within 12 months. The company will offer Vegotein N at prices comparable to basic, earthy-tasting pea proteins, making it a cost-effective solution for manufacturers. Furthermore, Axiom guarantees that its pea protein is soy-free, gluten-free (≤ 20ppm), and non-GMO, catering to the growing demand for clean-label products.
“The challenges of the past year have underscored the need for a reliable, local, and affordable pea protein supply chain," commented David Janow, CEO & Founder of Axiom Foods. "With Vegotein N, we’re not just addressing the tariff-related gap; we’re setting new standards by offering the best-tasting, most versatile, and cost-effective pea protein, all produced here in North America. Our patented innovation will transform the industry, helping manufacturers meet both margin and consumer demand.”
Beyond North America, Axiom Foods is targeting key international markets such as Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, including Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. The growing demand for pea protein, especially in sports nutrition and clean-label, allergen-free products, is driving this expansion. The recent tariffs on Chinese imports, along with the USDA’s 2024 SOE organic verification program, are helping eliminate counterfeit organic pea protein from the market. However, organic pea protein from North America remains limited, with predictions of wider availability by late 2025.
Building on the success of Vegotein CLEAR for low pH applications, Axiom Foods plans to introduce new products in the Vegotein N line by Q1 2025. This includes the lowest-priced pea protein on the market, with an anticipated 78% protein concentration, designed to meet the cost-sensitive needs of both manufacturers and consumers. With these strategic moves, Axiom Foods is well-positioned to address current market challenges and continue driving growth in the global pea protein industry.
