UNC Pembroke and N.C. State University join forces for sustainable protein research
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) is teaming up with N.C. State University to establish a groundbreaking research center focused on developing sustainable protein sources. The new center, backed by a substantial US$30 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund, aims to revolutionize the food industry and address pressing environmental challenges.
The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein, launched last month at N.C. State, will explore innovative methods for producing plant-based products and cultivated meat. UNCP will play a pivotal role in the partnership, receiving a US$350,000 allocation for student research opportunities, internships, and travel grants.
"This collaboration has the potential to transform Robeson County and North Carolina into leaders in the burgeoning sustainable protein industry," said Dr Bryan Sales, an Assistant Professor at UNCP. "By participating in this groundbreaking research, we can create new job opportunities and contribute to a more sustainable future."
The center's establishment is a strategic move, considering North Carolina's robust agriculture and biotechnology sectors. With a US$100 billion agricultural economy in 2022, the state provides a fertile ground for such an initiative.
"We are excited to partner with UNCP to leverage their expertise and connection to the agricultural community," added Dr Rohan Shirwaiker, an N.C. State Professor and Co-director of the center. "Together, we can create a robust ecosystem for sustainable protein innovation."
UNCP's involvement will primarily focus on workforce development. The university will select three students for internships, providing them with hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and contributing to the center's research projects.
"Our goal is to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in the growing sustainable protein industry," continued Shirwaiker. "By collaborating with N.C. State, we can create a pipeline of talent that will drive innovation in this field."
The center's broader vision includes fostering partnerships with local farmers to supply raw materials for research. "We believe in a collaborative approach that integrates traditional agriculture with cutting-edge technology," said Shirwaiker. "By working together, we can build a more resilient and sustainable food system."
The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein represents a significant step forward in addressing global food security and environmental challenges. Through research, education, and industry collaboration, the center aims to create a positive impact on both people and the planet.
