Ulrick & Short teams up with Nordmann to expand clean-label ingredient distribution in Europe

February 7, 2025

Ulrick & Short, a specialist in clean label ingredients, has announced a new partnership with international distributor Nordmann. This collaboration is set to improve the distribution of Ulrick & Short's clean label ingredient portfolio across Austria, France, Germany, and Switzerland.

Nordmann is a multinational distributor of food ingredients with expertise in providing application-based solutions and technical support. The company’s focus on customer service and innovation aligns with Ulrick & Short’s approach to ingredient transparency and functionality. By working together, the two firms aim to expand access to clean label solutions that meet evolving consumer expectations for natural, minimally processed food products.

Ulrick & Short develops a range of clean label ingredients designed to simplify food labels and enhance transparency for consumers. Their portfolio offers functionality such as thickening, stabilizing, fat replacement, phosphate removal, egg replacement, and gloss enhancement. These solutions are designed for use in applications such as baked goods, soups, sauces, meat, fish, ready meals, desserts, and plant-based or gluten-free products.

Among the key solutions in this partnership is synergie, a clean label thickening and stabilizing solution derived from a variety of base crops, designed for different manufacturing processes. Another offering, delyte, provides functional fat replacers that maintain indulgence and mouthfeel while reducing fat content. Complex is a functional protein designed for binding and emulsifying, applicable in meat and vegetarian products and suitable for protein fortification. Ovaprox serves as a functional egg replacer, enabling partial or total substitution without compromising texture, volume, or mouthfeel. Ezimoist enhances yield and succulence in meat and fish applications, allowing for phosphate reduction or replacement. Lastly, eziglaze™ is a plant-based glazing solution for adding shine, color, and adhesion to baked goods.

The partnership will allow food manufacturers in these markets to better integrate clean label solutions while benefiting from Nordmann’s distribution network and customer support. By working with Nordmann, Ulrick & Short expects to increase its market reach and strengthen relationships with manufacturers seeking innovative, natural ingredients.

Commenting on the collaboration, Robin Rotteveel, Manager Benelux & Export at Ulrick & Short, emphasized the role of clean label starches in providing clear and accessible ingredient information.

"Our aim with clean label functional starches is to simplify packaging information. By providing comprehensive technical support to our customers in the food industry, we ensure they can leverage our innovative solutions. We are thrilled to partner with Nordmann, whose expertise aligns with our mission. Together, we can develop new clean label starch solutions and expand our market reach," said Rotteveel.

From Nordmann’s perspective, the addition of Ulrick & Short’s clean label starches supports the company’s goal of offering innovative solutions that address current market trends. Dr Ulla Seidel, Global Sales Director Life Sciences at Nordmann, highlighted the significance of the agreement.

"This partnership marks an important milestone for Nordmann. With Ulrick & Short's clean label starches, we can offer our customers innovative products that meet current market demands. The extensive range of starches not only fulfills diverse processing needs but also enhances nutritional profiles and provides transparent product information," said Seidel.

The demand for clean label products continues to grow as consumers seek greater transparency in food formulations. Ingredients that allow for clear labeling while maintaining product performance are increasingly valued by food manufacturers across multiple categories.

Ulrick & Short’s approach focuses on developing ingredients that replace or reduce artificial additives while maintaining texture, stability, and functionality. With the support of Nordmann’s extensive distribution channels and technical expertise, the partnership aims to make clean label solutions more accessible across European markets.
