Oobli joins MISTA to drive growth in sweet protein applications for food and beverage

November 1, 2024

Oobli, a global pioneer in protein-based sweeteners, has partnered with MISTA, an exclusive food innovation platform created by Givaudan, to expand the reach and application of its revolutionary sweet proteins. The collaboration will leverage MISTA’s advanced development labs and commercial kitchens to explore the versatile applications of sweet proteins, positioning Oobli’s innovative ingredient as a sustainable alternative to traditional sugar in food and beverage products.

Oobli’s sweet proteins, derived from fruits and berries grown near the equator, are a highly concentrated, plant-based solution to sugar and artificial sweeteners. Remarkably, these proteins can be up to 5,000 times sweeter than traditional sugar, allowing for reduced usage in formulations without compromising sweetness. Unlike artificial sweeteners, sweet proteins are metabolized like any other dietary protein, offering a natural alternative that could transform the way foods are sweetened globally.

Scott May, founder and head of MISTA, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing Oobli’s contribution to healthier, climate-friendly sweetening options. “Oobli is a proven sweetener—the first company to gain an FDA no-questions letter for a sweet protein—that has huge potential to entirely reshape how we sweeten products,” said May.

Through MISTA’s innovation ecosystem, Oobli aims to develop new partnerships with consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands seeking more sustainable sweetening solutions. This collaboration aligns with Oobli’s goal to accelerate the adoption of sweet proteins as part of a “sweetener toolkit” that can be customized for taste, health, and sustainability.

“Oobli sweet proteins should be and can be part of any sweetener toolkit,” said Ali Wing, CEO at Oobli. “They are sugar-like in their great taste, better for our health and the planet, and they offer a cost-effective solution for CPG brands aiming to make better products. We’re excited to work with the MISTA team and ecosystem to introduce more brands to sweet proteins and make it easier for them to quickly integrate sweet proteins into their products.”

Earlier this year, Oobli expanded its footprint by partnering with Grupo Bimbo, the world’s leading bakery company, to incorporate sweet proteins into various baked goods categories. The collaboration with MISTA is expected to facilitate similar partnerships across a range of food and beverage categories, allowing more brands to access and benefit from Oobli’s sustainable sweetening solutions.

As Oobli continues to push the boundaries of sweet protein applications, its collaboration with MISTA marks a significant step toward reshaping the future of sweetness in food and beverage, combining health, sustainability, and innovation for an evolving consumer market.
